Is it True That its Not the Root Canal Procedure That Hurts- But Rather the Pain Leading up to it?

I set up a Dentist Appt for Tuesday to have a Root Canal done and was wondering who has gone through this and what was your experience? Is it True That its Not the Root Canal Procedure That Hurts- But Rather the Pain Leading up to it?
It depends on the dentist, really.

One guy killed me, another guy, it was totally painless.

Once they get the root out, then that tooth can't hurt ever again (from tooth aches). The gums can though.

If it hurts when they're drilling, ask them to use CarboCain.

Seriously, this stuff is the only thing that works for me, and it's not their first choice! Is it True That its Not the Root Canal Procedure That Hurts- But Rather the Pain Leading up to it?
The decay is hurting the nerve, causing pain. The nerve is deadened by anesthesia (which is a small injection in the gum which is not pleasant, but not very painful. Then you feel no pain. After the anesthesia wears off, there is some pain, but IB will take care of that in a day or 2. Do it; losing your whole tooth is the result of ignoring a need for a root canal.
root canals are no more painful than other tooth repair.

I have had 3 so I know.
Everything went fine... yeah... it was up until the root canal was actually done that hurt, and the anxiety of getting it done that was a major pain.
