Is it true that if plants dont get enough food, their roots will eat themselves?

Kind of.

Firstly plants make their own food from sunlight, air and water. The only way that a plant could not get enough food is if you kept it in a dark room or cut all its leaves off.

Under those circumstances where plants are lacking in food, usually when they drop their leaves in winter, they utilise starch reserves. Those starch reserves caan be in the stem or they can be in the roots. In plants like carrots and sweet potatoes those starchy roots are quite obvious and are also a food source for humans.

So in one sense you could say that some plants ';eat their own roots';, insofar as a carrot root will shrivel up as it consumes its own starch reserves. Is it true that if plants dont get enough food, their roots will eat themselves?
umm maybeIs it true that if plants dont get enough food, their roots will eat themselves?
No. If plants don't get enough water and fertilization the roots will die. This of course cuts off the life support to the plant and the plant will die.
no they would die if you dont look after them
Well i have heard that some plants do that
im studying biology and i havent heard anything like that....yet ofcourse ;)
Never heard of this.. but I HAVE heard that if plants don't get enough water. they emit a high-pitched sound similar to a scream.. creepy, huh?!
Well, I've been a gardener for 40 years and i've never heard of this one before, no !!! if plants don't get enough nutrients they just wither and die.
For some, yes, even if they are not hungry...

Some plants store food in their roots. Examples of such plants are potato and tapioca. These plants will then feed on the stored foodstuff. This class of plants are known as tubers.
no
Someone is pulling your leg.
Root would eat himself? Oh no!!! :)
Can't be true... I really don't think roots can be reabsorbed.
